Dry Bulk Decarbonization
WindWings Installation on Capesize Bulk Carrier
First installation of WindWings rigid wing sails on a Capesize bulk carrier, demonstrating 14% fuel savings on iron ore routes.
A major mining company sought to reduce the carbon footprint of their dedicated iron ore transportation between Brazil and China. Working with WindWings Maritime, they selected a 180,000 DWT Capesize bulk carrier for the pilot installation.
Two WindWings rigid wing sails (37m height x 20m width each) were installed during a scheduled drydocking in Singapore. The installation took 18 days including commissioning and crew training. The automated control system optimizes sail angle based on wind conditions without requiring crew intervention.
Performance monitoring over 12 months of operation on the Brazil-China iron ore route showed:
- Average fuel savings of 14% on laden voyages
- Up to 25% savings achieved in favorable wind conditions
- Seamless integration with vessel operations
- No impact on cargo operations or port compatibility
- Minimal maintenance requirements
The success of this installation has led to orders for 5 additional vessel installations.
